POLITICO reports, “Attorney General Jeff Sessions will testify in an open hearing Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee on his role in the unfolding Russia investigation, according to congressional and Justice Department officials.” The Washington Post has some useful background as a reminder, “Sessions had a remarkable path to the attorney general post. He was an early and vocal supporter of Trump during the campaign, when most Republican lawmakers dismissed the candidate. He arrived in the job in February eager to launch ambitious efforts to combat violent crime and deport undocumented immigrants. But officials said Sessions’s relationship with Trump has been strained since the attorney general recused himself from the Russia probe in March.” POLITICO notes, “The hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.” Expect interesting post-game spin and see this as a Comey Day post-script. It will not be part of next season’s highlight reel, however. This will be elementary round-abouts concerning the Russian Ambassador but perfect confection for mass consumption, popcorn worthy reality TV politics. What more could America and Americans ask for? Sovereignty may be just too much for today.

The San-Diego Union Tribune has five good broad strokes questions for Private Russian Sessions:

  1. Should Sessions have recused himself from the FBI’s Russia investigation?”
  2. How many times did Session [sic] meet with Russian Ambassador Kislyak?”
  3. Was Sessions’ testimony to senators during his confirmation hearings truthful?”
  4. Did Sessions handle Comey’s request not to be left alone with Trump appropriately?”
  5. Did Sessions play a role in Comey’s firing?”s

During his first cabinet meeting (we are in month five of “Dr. Strangelove” in real life), the insecure shit bird pretending to run the country sat and watched as “One by one, they praised President Trump, taking turns complimenting his integrity, his message, his strength, his policies. Their leader sat smiling, nodding his approval.” This is insane authoritarian bullshit! Let’s plug in for a moment to what this sounds like. The New York Times reports Mike Pence kicked it off, “The greatest privilege of my life is to serve as vice president to the president who’s keeping his word to the American people.” Oh, my. Then, Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta, “I am privileged to be heredeeply honored — and I want to thank you for your commitment to the American workers.” Excuse me? Afterwards, “Sonny Perdue, the agriculture secretary, had just returned from Mississippi and had a message to deliver. ‘They love you there,’ he offered, grinning across the antique table at Mr. Trump.” Exhale. Oh, wait no… “Reince Priebus, the chief of staff whose job insecurity has been the subject of endless speculation, outdid them all, telling the president — and the assembled news cameras — ‘We thank you for the opportunity and the blessing to serve your agenda.’” If this is what the American people want, then we have lost all track of what freedom actually is and how it is distinct from tyranny because this is firmly on that latter road. The puppet president loved every moment, The New York Times reports, he reacted to such a spontaneous outburst of adoration for the Dear Leader from his cabinet officials, “‘Thank you, Mick,’ he told Mick Mulvaney, his budget director. ‘Good job,’ he told Scott Pruitt, his E.P.A. chief. ‘Very good, Daniel,’ he said to Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence.” Hello to planet earth, WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP. At least Senator Chuck Schumer responded, as one should with derision and mockery, in a tweet, “GREAT meeting today with the best staff in the history of the world!!!” As The New York Times reports, “In a video posted with the tweet, Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, sat at a table with young staff members who, at his prompting, praised his performance on Sunday talk shows and the appearance of his hair. One repeated Mr. Priebus’s quotation word for word, prompting the senator and his aides to erupt into laughter.”

The AP reports, “Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Monday underscored the distrust between Moscow and Washington, telling the House Armed Services Committee that he’s seen nothing to indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin is interested in cooperation with the United States.” According to the AP, “Mr. Putin has chosen to be a strategic competitor,” Mattis said.

The AP reports, “Senate Republicans and Democrats reached agreement late Monday on a new package of sanctions on Russia amid the firestorm over Russia’s meddling in the presidential election and investigations into Moscow’s possible collusion with members of President Donald Trump’s campaign.” The University of Texas has a crowd chant, “Give ‘em hell, give ‘em hell, make ‘em eat shit!” Well that. Or if you prefer Toby Keith, “We’ll put a boot in your ass, that’s the American way!” Here is what makes this kind of beautiful for now: “Top lawmakers on two committees — Banking and Foreign Relations — announced the deal, which would require a congressional review if a president attempts to ease or end current penalties.” Baby Trump does not like oversight. He likes golf and people who sing his praises and grabbing pussy and grandstanding and telling lies. We are living with an authoritarian president and everyone who stands up against this is a patriot. According to the AP, “The plan also calls for strengthening current sanctions and imposing new ones on corrupt Russian actors, those involved in human rights abuses and those supplying weapons to the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.” Senator Chuck Schumer said, “By codifying existing sanctions and requiring congressional review of any decision to weaken or lift them, we are ensuring that the United States continues to punish President (Vladimir) Putin for his reckless and destabilizing actions. These additional sanctions will also send a powerful and bipartisan statement to Russia and any other country who might try to interfere in our elections that they will be punished.”

The Independent reports, “Prominent Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has been jailed for 30 days by a court in Russia after authorities accused him of helping to organize public protests.” Any expression of the will of the people in Russia is a crushing defeat for the Russian mafia state. According to The Independent, “Over 800 people were detained in Moscow, while in St Petersburg, about 500 were forced into police buses at a rally that drew up to 10,000 people.” In order to enforce the kind of repression that can induce fear without exemplary total brutality like say in Syria, “Some of the rallies were permitted by authorities and passed peacefully, but police cracked down brutally on others.” The New York Times looks at the teenagers standing up to Putin — they would be more courageous than much of our political, business and media elites who have consented in various ways to authoritarian governance through alignment or promotion.

Defense News reports, “The Ukrainian parliament has voted to restore NATO membership as the country’s strategic foreign policy objective.” Defense News reports, “The Verkhovna Rada passed a bill ‘to amend the Ukrainian laws on national security and internal and foreign policies. The new laws hereby enact Ukraine’s commitment to achieve NATO membership strategically by having made it legally binding,’ the parliament said in a statement on June 8.”

Please those of you with no experience in authoritarian states or pre-coup societies, believe TRUMPISTAN WATCH that stories like the one in The New York Times, “Mattis Quietly Keeps Distance From Trump’s Most Divisive Moves” signals that a coup is likely forthcoming. By toting the neutrality of the military, and distinguishing the regime from the head of the military, the press is effectively insulating the military and placing it above politics, which is where it needs to be for when politics rages well beyond acceptable levels of normalcy.  All militaries, especially ones attached to democratic republics know that the military coup is the last resort option because it does not simply restore democracy but also forever retards and changes the course of the history of the republic. Note, this is not to say one is imminent, rather that elsewhere in the world when such articles appear, households stock up on dried goods, cooking oil and butter. This, by the way, is everywhere the Kremlin dreams we would be by now. If you are not afraid yet do not mistake your lack of concern for courage, for covfefe or for normalcy, it is more likely none of these things. You can unplug the bananas from your ears, to paraphrase Yuri Bezmenov, continue in denial until they come for you, or wake up. Note: you will be forced to wake up at some point if you do not sooner rather than later because authoritarianism is not some nicely contained project. If you live in Europe, this is your security blanket, so be concerned at the very least. In noting, as The New York Times does, “Mr. Mattis has avoided publicly backing the president’s most divisive moves,” and “has appeared behind the lectern in the Pentagon briefing room only twice since he became defense secretary, the better to stay out of political debates, aides say,” the paper is signaling his neutrality. We also have “his belief that the military’s political neutrality can help hold together a deeply divided nation,” And then there is this: last month, during a commencement speech at West Point, “he pointed to ancient Athens in hailing apolitical ‘defenders who look past the hot political rhetoric of our day’ to protect ‘our experiment in self-governance.’” By contrast, in a commencement speech at the U.S. Naval Academy, Pence praised Trump.

The Washington Post reports, “Hackers allied with the Russian government have devised a cyberweapon that has the potential to be the most disruptive yet against electric systems that Americans depend on for daily life, according to U.S. researchers.” According to The Washington Post, “The malware, which researchers have dubbed CrashOverride, is known to have disrupted only one energy systemin Ukraine in December. In that incident, the hackers briefly shut down one-fifth of the electric power generated in Kiev.” The Washington Post notes, “CrashOverride is only the second instance of malware specifically tailored to disrupt or destroy industrial control systems.” The first was StuxNet, developed by the U.S. to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program.

Aryan princess Ivanka was on “Fox and Friends” yesterday! Oh, boy! Trump event tweeted about it because throwing covfefe at it is now an official strategy. According to The New York Times, “Ivanka Trump said on Monday that her father felt ‘very vindicated’ by the testimony last week of James B. Comey, the ousted F.B.I. director, who, under oath, accused President Trump of firing him for his handling of the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to sway the election.” Recall, Comey called Aryan princess Ivanka’s Daddy a liar many times in many different ways. The New York Times also notes, “She said she had been blindsided by the vitriol of Washington and was working to stay out of the fray.” It does not work like that when you are a part of one of the most racist, treasonous, anti-democratic regimes this nation has ever seen, sorry Aryan princess.   Also Daddy spent years promoting a racist conspiracy about Obama being born in Kenya but never mind, the purity of Aryan princess has been defiled by the Swamp, never the Russian mafia! They take good care of her. The Aryan princess Ivanka told “Fox and Friends,” “It is hard, and there is a level of viciousness that I was not expecting. I was not expecting the intensity of this experience, but this isn’t supposed to be easy.” Has it been hard on Aryan princess, really? Not only is Aryan princess complicit, she is also delusional. Oh the struggles of a mafia daughter! Everyone think about poor Aryan princess’s feelings the next time you go calling her things like Aryan princess, nepotism Barbie, or a new favorite in the canon, Champagne Popsicle.

The fake president’s favorite conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who the president personally called after becoming our fake president, is going to get Megyn Kelly treatment! Guess who is not happy? Remember Sandy Hook and all those dead children shot by a white guy who as per standard operating procedure, was mentally ill, not a cold blooded murderer like every non-white who kills? Well Alex Jones spent years claiming Sandy Hook was a conspiracy and unleashing all of America’s crazy — we can all concede there is a considerable amount — onto the parents of dead children. And so Megyn Kelly has herself a controversy, and controversy drives ratings, and this person who was a huge part of the problem at Fox News continues to be but on steroids as she is now on a mainstream normalizing network that brought us “The Apprentice,” the greatest act of normalization in U.S. history. The New York Times reports, “Megyn Kelly, who left Fox News earlier this year to anchor a new weekly show for NBC, ‘Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly,’ said on Sunday that she would air an interview with Mr. Jones on June 18 ‘to discuss controversies and conspiracies.’” And in discussing, she will normalize. Why is she doing this? Because Megyn Kelly is a terrible person and NBC executives are void of all concern for their fellow Americans, for the future and health of the republic because oh my god, ratings! Money! Megyn Kelly! If you have not already, read Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death.

The Washington Post reports the New York Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park performance of “Julius Caesar” is facing a corporate boycott from sponsors Delta and Bank of America because “Caesar is a businessman known for his petulant personality, fancy suits and blondish hair with orange overtones. His wife, Calpurnia, even has a Slavic accent, much like first lady Melania Trump, In the play, Roman senators fear Caesar had become power hungry, so they stab him to death.” According to The Washington Post, “Delta Air Lines pulled its funding of the theater group on Sunday in response to mounting criticism. Soon after, Bank of America pulled its sponsorship of the play but will retain its funding of the theater.” Corporations do not do irony or understanding the human condition as well as they might imagine, it seems.
