The AP reports, “President Donald Trump’s White House is relying on a sweeping interpretation of executive privilege that is rankling members of Congress on both sides of the aisle as current and former advisers parade to Capitol Hill for questioning about possible connections with Russia. The White House’s contention: Pretty much everything is off limits until the president says it’s not.” This came to the fore during Steve Bannon’s testimony Tuesday but the AP notes, “Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who never served in the Trump administration, had adopted the administration’s posture in his interview with the committee.” However, “There were signs, though, that not all administration officials were expected to do the same,” as, “Schiff said that in an interview with another administration official, ‘there was no claim of privilege, no claim that these periods of time were off limits. And no effort to hide behind a later potential invocation of privilege by the executive.’” The AP reports, “He didn’t refer to the official by name, but it was White House deputy chief of staff, Rick Dearborn.”

CNBC reports, “The White House believed it had an agreement with the House Intelligence Committee to limit questions for Steve Bannon only to events on the presidential campaign, and not during the ousted former chief strategist’s time in the Trump administration”. CNBC adds, “staffers for the committee and the White House on Friday discussed the parameters of Bannon’s testimony. The White House emerged from that conversation believing it had an agreement to limit the questioning of Bannon just to events during the campaign, and not during the transition period or his time in the White House. Then, hours into Bannon’s closed-door testimony on Tuesday, Bannon’s lawyers informed the White House from Capitol Hill that the questions would extend beyond the scope of what the White House understood the agreement to be.” Oh poor babies, the White House would never pull a bait and switch. They are so pure and innocent. And don’t forget, they would never harm a fly either!

Axios reports, “Bannon admitted that he’d had conversations with Reince Priebus, Sean Spicer and legal spokesman Mark Corallo about Don Junior’s infamous meeting with the Russians in Trump Tower in June 2016,” during testimony Tuesday before the House intelligence committee. Axios added, “Bannon immediately realized he’d slipped up and disclosed conversations he wasn’t supposed to discuss, because they happened while he was chief strategist in the White House. Throughout the rest of the session, committee members — in particular Republican Trey Gowdy and Democrat Adam Schiff — hammered Bannon over the fact that he’d mentioned those conversations but refused to discuss anything else about his time in the White House.” Oops, he did it again! Loose lips sink orange Russian bullshit.

NBC News reports, “FBI agents showed up at Steve Bannon’s Washington home last week intent on serving him with a subpoena to appear before a grand jury investigating possible ties between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia”. NBC News notes, “The agents were unaware at the time that Bannon had retained Washington lawyer William Burck just hours earlier,” on January 9. According to NBC News, “Once redirected, the agents sent the order to Burck”. NBC News adds, “The subpoena compels Bannon to testify before a grand jury, skipping the voluntary interview with Mueller’s team that many in Trump’s orbit have elected to take. But Mueller may still leave open the option for an interview in lieu of grand jury testimony. Bannon is likely to accept such an option if it is made available”. NBC News reports, “Bannon is expected to be more forthcoming with Mueller’s team,” than he was with the House intelligence committee, adding, “‘He’ll answer any questions’ Mueller wants,” citing sources close to Bannon.

BuzzFeed reports the Special Counsel is “scrutinizing newly uncovered financial transactions between the Russian government and people or businesses inside the United States.” BuzzFeed reports records “show years of Russian financial activity within the US that bankers and federal law enforcement officials deemed suspicious, raising concerns about how the Kremlin’s diplomats operated here long before the 2016 election.” According to BuzzFeed, “the former Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak, received $120,000 ten days after the election of Donald Trump. Bankers flagged it to the US government as suspicious in part because the transaction, marked payroll, didn’t fit prior pay patterns.” Additionally, “Five days after Trump’s inauguration, someone attempted to withdraw $150,000 cash from the embassy’s account — but the embassy’s bank blocked it. Bank employees reported the attempted transaction to the US government”. BuzzFeed adds, “From March 8 to April 7, 2014, bankers flagged nearly 30 checks for a total of about $370,000 to embassy employees, who cashed the checks as soon as they received them, making it virtually impossible to trace where the money went. Bank officials noted that the employees had not received similar payments in the past”. Furthermore “the Russian Cultural Centre — an arm of the government that sponsors classes and performances and is based in Washington, DC — sent $325,000 in checks that banking officials flagged as suspicious. The amounts were not consistent with normal payroll checks and some of the transactions fell below the $10,000 threshold that triggers a notice to the US government.” BuzzFeed adds, “The Russian embassy in Washington, DC, sent more than $2.4 million to small home-improvement companies controlled by a Russian immigrant living not far from there. Between 2013 and March 2017, that contractor’s various companies received about 600 such payments, earmarked for construction jobs at Russian diplomatic compounds. Bankers told the Treasury they did not think those transactions were related to the election but red-flagged them because the businesses seemed too small to have carried out major work on the embassy and because the money was cashed quickly or wired to other accounts.” BuzzFeed notes, “Kislyak, through a spokesperson, declined to comment.” BuzzFeed adds the Senate intelligence committee “requested financial information that the Treasury may have on a total of 45 people or entities.” This includes “Ivan Tavrin, a Putin ally who is the chief executive at telecom giant MegaFon and has a stake in the Russian social media site VKontakte,” “Bob Foresman, who once ran the Russia desk at Barclays bank and was in charge of Renaissance Capital, a Moscow-based investment firm,” and “Alisher Usmanov, one of the richest men in Russia and a close ally of President Putin”. BuzzFeed notes, “No suspicious activity reports on Tavrin or Foresman have been located,” citing law enforcement sources. No such disclaimer on Usmanov.

McClatchy reports, “The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency”. McClatchy adds, “FBI counterintelligence investigators have focused on the activities of Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank who is known for his close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA”. Bloomberg previously reported, “Torshin, a leading figure in Putin’s party, has been implicated in money laundering by judicial authorities in Spain”. That report said, “Spanish investigators alleged in an almost 500-page internal report that Torshin, who was then a senator, capitalized on his government role to assist mobsters laundering funds through Spanish properties and banks.” McClatchy adds, “A summary obtained by McClatchy of the still-secret report links Torshin to Russian money laundering and describes him as a godfather in a major Russian criminal organization called Taganskaya. Investigators for three congressional committees probing Russia’s 2016 operations also have shown interest in Torshin, a lifetime NRA member who has attended several of its annual conventions. At the group’s meeting in Kentucky in May 2016, Torshin spoke to Donald Trump Jr. during a gala event”.

Scaparrotti, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said Russia’s military modernization efforts are challenging allies in a range of areas such as cybersecurity.” Stars and Stripes adds, “During two days of talks in Brussels, alliance defense chiefs worked on plans to set up two new command headquarters to deal with a more aggressive Russia. The plans call for dual headquarters to focus on ensuring the faster movement of forces across the Atlantic Ocean and around Europe.” Stars and Stripes notes, “The gathered generals, who included Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Reuters reports, “The United States is assessing the security implications of Russia’s latest deployment of S-400 air defenses to Crimea, a U.S. military official said on Tuesday, adding it could give existing Russian defenses more resilience.” You think? Recall, “Moscow’s deployment on Saturday added a second division of S-400 surface-to-air missiles in Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, triggering economic sanctions by the European Union and United States. It deployed its first division of S-400s in the spring of 2017 near the port town of Fedosia. The new division will be based next to the town of Sevastopol and will control the airspace over the border with Ukraine”.

Task and Purpose reports, “with the Pentagon adopting an increasingly rigid posture in eastern Europe, the Army is learning to love the Stinger once again.” According to Task and Purpose, “On Jan. 11, the service announced that, for the first time in nearly 15 years, it would add training and coaching of two-man Stinger missile-system teams into the 7th Army Training Command’s Joint Multinational Readiness Center future training exercises. The previous day, 50 Observer Coach/Trainers from the Fires Center of Excellence in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, arrived at the Army Garrison Hohenfels Training Area in Germany for their own crash course on the Stinger. The goal, according to Air Defense Integrated Office training and doctrine director Lt. Col. Aaron Felter, is to rapidly incorporate 62 Stinger teams into U.S. Army Europe’s operational force.” As Task and Purpose notes, “Make no mistake: ‘Against any adversary’ is a clear euphemism for Russia, increasingly aggressive in eastern Europe since the 2014 annexation of Crimea from neighboring Ukraine, and the Stinger training comes amid a steady buildup of forces under U.S. Army Europe as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve.” Task and Purpose adds, “the specter of a confrontation between Russian and NATO-aligned forces in eastern Europe is enough of an incentive for the Army to re-up its training.” As U.S. Army Europe operations chief Brig. Gen. Timothy Daugherty put it, “War is expensive in both treasure and lives,” adding, “Preparing for war is a lot cheaper than executing one.” Amen. Remember: Russia only respects strength.

Reuters reports, “Two masked men set fire to the office of one of Russia’s biggest human rights groups in southern Russia on Wednesday, an arson attack which the group, Memorial, said was part of a campaign to drive it from the region. CCTV of the incident showed the men setting a ladder against the red brick building in Nazran, a town in the Russian region of Ingushetia which borders Chechnya, in the early hours of the morning and sparks leaping from its windows shortly afterwards.” Reuters notes, “Memorial said documents and office equipment had been destroyed.” Reuters adds, “Memorial is under pressure in the Muslim-majority North Caucasus region after police in Chechnya detained the head of its office there this month and accused him of possessing a large quantity of cannabis, a crime punishable by up to 10 years in jail. Concerns about the case of the detained activist, Oyub Titiev, who has written to President Vladimir Putin saying he was framed and that the police planted the drugs in his car, prompted the United States and Europe to call for his release.”

Ok, the song selection for this one might be too caustic and is definitely not meant to promote or encourage violence. The Washington Post reports, “A conservative lobbyist known for his controversial positions was attacked and sprayed with a ‘caustic substance’ outside his Arlington home on Tuesday evening, according to police. Arlington police say an investigation is ongoing and that there is no indication yet who may have been behind the attack on Jack Burkman, a Republican strategist and radio host,” who was behind Rick Gates legal defense fundraiser last month. The Washington Post adds, “On Tuesday evening, Burkman said in an interview, he walked to the grocery store, a short distance from his quiet Arlington street a few blocks from the Potomac. He purchased items for dinner and went home, so lost in his own thoughts that he said he didn’t notice the dark SUV in his driveway until he was about 30 feet away. As Burkman tells it, a man in a black jacket got out of the SUV on the passenger side and, as he came around to the front of the car, put on a mask that ‘looked like something you would see in one of the movies of a bank robber.’ He had something in his hand, and Burkman said he thought, ‘The end is coming.’” The Washington Post continues, “Instead, Burkman said the man sprayed him with what he thought may have been pepper spray. The man yelled an obscenity at Burkman, struck him in the head and, as Burkman screamed and stumbled, got back inside his SUV and drove off. Burkman said he wasn’t sure if there was another person in the car.” Burkman had previously offered a $130,000 reward for information about the killing of Seth Rich, a former DNC staffer whose death triggered a string of far right conspiracies that tried to tie him – and not WikiLeaks or Russia – to the hacking of the DNC in 2016.

The Guardian reports Simona Mangiante, the fiancé of the indicted novice Trump campaign foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos, said “She was introduced to [Maltese Professor and Kremlin cut-out Joseph] Mifsud in about 2012 by Gianni Pittella, a well-known Italian MEP who in 2014 became president of the European parliament and who served as the leader of the Socialists and Progressive Democrats group. ‘I always saw Mifsud with Pittella,’ she says. Pittella had no comment.” The Guardian adds, “Mangiante worked for two high-powered European parliament officials, Mairead McGuinness – a vice-president – and McGuinness’s Italian predecessor Roberta Angelilli. She was also an administrator in the presidency office of Martin Schulz, then a German MEP and now the leader of Germany’s Social Democrats.” Recall the last German Chancellor from the Social Democrats is Gerhard Schroeder, now fully in Russia’s employ, ostensibly as a Gazprom poo-bah. The Guardian reports, “When her contract expired, Pittella suggested she go to work for Mifsud in London, a city she loved. The professor offered her a job in 2016”. According to The Guardian, “Mifsud’s diplomatic activity, Mangiante now believes, was a façade.” For her part, “Mangiante says she has been to Russia once – for a child protection conference in St Petersburg – and never visited Moscow.”

The New York Times reports, “Cardiologists not associated with the White House said Wednesday that President Trump’s physical exam revealed serious heart concerns, including very high levels of so-called bad cholesterol, which raises the risk that Mr. Trump could have a heart attack while in office.” Bring. It. On. Also miracle of miracles, his physical reveals he has a heart when his daily (or “faily” as TRUMPISTAN WATCH first mistyped in a Freudian slip) actions reveal quite the opposite! This is of course despite the alternative fact that “Dr. Ronny L. Jackson, a rear admiral and the White House physician, said Tuesday in his report on the president’s medical condition that Mr. Trump was in ‘excellent’ cardiac health despite having an LDL cholesterol level of 143, well above the desired level of 100 or less.” Now in a less hagiographic take than The New York Times offered up originally, the paper of broken record for normalizing concedes, “Dr. David Maron, the director of preventive cardiology at Stanford University’s medical school, said Wednesday that it was alarming that the president’s LDL levels remain above 140 even though he is taking 10 milligrams of Crestor, a powerful drug that is used to lower cholesterol levels to well below 100. Dr. Maron said he would ‘definitely’ be worried about Mr. Trump’s risk for having a heart attack if the president were one of his patients,” and, you know, not a terrible fascist bent on destroying American democracy. The New York Times adds, “Dr. Maron offered a blunt reply,” as to whether the fake president is in good health of “God, no.” He is not alone as additional “cardiologists also disputed Dr. Jackson’s rosy assessment of the president’s heart health. Several said Mr. Trump’s goal should be to get his LDL below 100, or even under 70. He has a real risk of having a heart attack or stroke, especially considering his weight and lack of exercise, they said.” According to “Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Research Institute,” the fake president has “a really high LDL,” adding, “We’re talking about a 70-plus-year-old man who is obese and doesn’t exercise. Just looking at the lab value, you would raise a big red flag.” If he were to have a heart attack, the only thing we would be robbed of is seeing him face justice. So let’s hope he remains well enough to stand trial for his crimes against our country eventually.

USA Today reports, “Eight transgender volunteers have signed paperwork to join the active-duty ranks of the Air Force, the Pentagon acknowledged on Tuesday. The eight are among the first known transgender applicants to the military since the Pentagon opened recruiting to them on Jan. 1.” Recall, “Federal courts late last year compelled the military to begin accepting their applications, following a series of delays in recruiting transgender volunteers that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had ordered while the issue of their service was under review. In July, President Trump tweeted that he wanted to ban the service of transgender troops.” Looks like that ban is as real as his presidency, which is to say it’s fake!

The New York Times reports, “The Trump administration on Tuesday released a report attempting to link immigrants to terrorism, presenting statistics showing that the vast majority of people convicted of international terrorism charges in the United States over the past 15 years were born in foreign countries.” The New York Times adds, “The 11-page report, parts of which were confusing and in some respects misleading, highlighted cases in which immigrants were linked to terrorism plots after being admitted to the country as part of the diversity visa lottery, or because they were related to American citizens or legal residents. President Trump added to the confusion by writing on Twitter that the report ‘shows that nearly 3 in 4 individuals convicted of terrorism-related charges are foreign-born.’” One problem with this assessment of Twitler’s: “The report actually concluded that three out of four individuals convicted of ‘international’ terrorism or terrorism-related charges were foreign-born,” The New York Times reports. Of course, “Testifying on Capitol Hill, Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, called the report’s findings ‘truly chilling data,’” because she is obviously an enormous embarrassment, not to mention a liar. However, “the statistics were notable as much for what they did not contain as for what they did,” The New York Times notes, adding, “They included cases — a senior administration official who insisted on anonymity to detail the report could not say how many — in which foreigners were extradited to the United States to face trial. That means they did not, in fact, enter the country ‘through our immigration system’”. Oops! Fake stats for a fake president! What could be more Soviet? Additionally, “The statistics also included terrorism-related charges for attacks or other offenses carried out overseas, rather than in the United States. Additionally, they omitted domestic terrorism episodes that have accounted for a substantial number of terrorism-related deaths over the same 15-year period,” The New York Times notes. Then there are the facts, not the alternatives! “In a bulletin released last May, the F.B.I. reported that white supremacist groups were responsible for 49 homicides in 26 attacks from 2000 to 2016, ‘more than any other domestic extremist movement,’” The New York Times notes.

Gizmodo reports, “A cadre of public interest groups and at least 22 attorneys general have filed petitions this week challenging the FCC order that seeks to gut net neutrality. But before the real legal challenge begins, net neutrality advocates are fighting to ensure the case is heard in their court of choice.” Gizmodo adds, “Santa Clara County filed a petition in the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, which is encompasses 9 states, including California, Oregon, and Washington, as well as the territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. For those who want a say in where the case is heard, there’s only a 10-day window to file—however, no one is quite sure when that 10-day window begins.” Gizmodo adds, “While the commission has already released the order, it has yet to be published in the Federal Register, the government’s daily journal in which rules and public notices are filed. Either event may serve as the kicking-off point for legal challenges, so several net neutrality advocates filed what are called ‘protective petitions’ this week. To cover their bases, they will file again once the order hits the register.” Additionally, Gizmodo notes, “New America’s Open Technology Institute (OTI) announced its filing on Tuesday and said it was working to ensure is heard in the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.” Furthermore, “In a show of force Tuesday, 22 attorneys general from 21 states and the District of Columbia joined the legal battle.” Other groups filing include the Mozilla Foundation and Free Press.

And surprise, the death cult GOP helps Trump ignore such pleas immediately! But first The Washington Post op-ed where Senator John McCain observes, “After leaving office, President Ronald Reagan created the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award to recognize individuals who have fought to spread liberty worldwide. Nancy Reagan continued the tradition after her husband’s death, and in 2008 she bestowed the honor on human rights icon Natan Sharansky, who credited Reagan’s strong defense of freedom for his own survival in Soviet gulags.” Unlike fake president Trump, McCain notes, “Reagan recognized that as leader of the free world, his words carried enormous weight, and he used them to inspire the unprecedented spread of democracy around the world.” McCain wisely adds fake president Trump “has threatened to continue his attempt to discredit the free press by bestowing ‘fake news awards’ upon reporters and news outlets whose coverage he disagrees with. Whether Trump knows it or not, these efforts are being closely watched by foreign leaders who are already using his words as cover as they silence and shutter one of the key pillars of democracy.” So how does the death cult GOP respond? By publishing the “fake news awards” on its own website and helping the president with something he can tweet out and link to. Smell that? That’s the rotting MAGAts of Trumpistan picking at the carcass of the positive aspects of Reagan’s legacy.

The Washington Post reports, “An adult-film star who was reportedly paid to remain silent about a sexual relationship with Donald Trump a decade before he became president spoke to a journalist because she feared he would not pay up, according to a new account. Stephanie Clifford, whose professional name is Stormy Daniels, spoke to the online magazine Slate multiple times in 2016 before breaking off contact a week before the election, Jacob Weisberg, chairman and editor in chief of the Slate Group, wrote in an article published Tuesday.” Hey that’s one more damaging story the press withheld before the election about our fake president because presumably there is some self-righteous, sanctimonious justification – or rather just pure fear of a lawsuit because the American media is so goddamn courageous! The Washington Post continues, “In the story, Clifford is described as having ‘worked out an agreement for the presidential candidate to pay her a six-figure sum to keep quiet.’ This document would have shielded the names of the parties involved, the Slate article added.” Weisberg wrote, “Daniels said she was talking to me and sharing these details because Trump was stalling on finalizing the confidentiality agreement and paying her,” adding, “Given her experience with Trump, she suspected he would stall her until after the election, and then refuse to sign or pay up.” Quite the gent. Just remember this as you listen to Hollywood speeches about the sanctity of the media or members of the media commenting that they stand for liberty and justice, remember all of this. TRUMPISTAN WATCH had no idea such cowardice existed in its own ranks, then along came Trump to make mince meat out of many claims of courage. And for those of you who remember how the death cult GOP wasted two years of our lives on a consensual blow job in the 1990s, the tawdry escapade of “another adult-film star,” was furnished by Alana Evans who told, “‘Megyn Kelly Today’ that Clifford had called her to invite her to a hotel room with Trump”. If you are an Evangelical supporter, how the hell do you justify this? If you knew about this before the 2016 election and are a member of the media, not another sanctimonious word from you ever!

Recode reports, “Twitter is exploring ways to notify perhaps millions of users who viewed Russian propaganda during the 2016 U.S. presidential election”. As if that alone is simply the problem! Recode adds, “the company’s director of public policy, Carlos Monje, said Twitter is ‘working to identify and inform individually the users who have been exposed to IRA accounts during the election’ — referring to the Internet Research Agency, an online troll army with Kremlin ties,” during a Senate committee hearing. Of course, “Monje did not elaborate how Twitter would do that. He did not say, for example, if the company would alert users who saw tweets from Russian-controlled accounts or only those targeted with ads. Nor did he say if Twitter would alert users who viewed content generated by RT,” which Twitter “has recently banned from sponsoring tweets on the site. Asked for additional details, a spokeswoman for Twitter declined to comment.” Lip service much? The Senate and the American people are not stupid, we can all see no one at Twitter is actually trying because it gets in the way of skiing in Tahoe. Of course, “Earlier this month, for example, Twitter failed to meet a deadline to answer questions sent from members of Congress who are investigating the Kremlin’s efforts on social media. Twitter previously reported that it found roughly 2,700 accounts tied to the IRA. It also ran a number of ads during the 2016 election purchased by RT.” Try just a little bit harder. The Daily Caller, the pantheon of stupid far right conspiracy sites, loves far left pro-Russia actor Glenn Greenwald so much! Why? Because they have the same enemies: decency, democracy, Senator Jeff Flake. The Daily Caller writes, “While Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona likened President Donald Trump’s language to former Russian dictator Joseph Stalin, the senator also voted to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Tuesday evening.” Yes, and? Stalin actually used the words “enemy of the people” many times! FISA is an unrelated different matter all together, but it’s Greenwald’s favorite drum to beat because it gets civil libertarians and many who are woefully unaware of many things in this world — national security matters, how FISA actually works, the necessity for an intelligence service — really worked up and frothing at the mouth. What did Flake say? Well recall, he said, “It is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Joseph Stalin to describe his enemies,” The Daily Caller quotes. This is all true. Stalin spoke those words many times. He did not compare Trump to Stalin, he said he is using his words. So what does the profoundly stupid and increasingly irrelevant in anything but a what-a-joke-he-is former journalist turned full time pro-Russia talking points hack tweet? Oh a horrific distortion, of course, because when you forego journalism for propaganda, you abandon facts. Greenwald tweeted, “‘Hi, I’m Jeff Flake. I’m really worried about our Stalinist President, which is why I voted less than 24 hours ago to increase his domestic spying powers and prevent any safeguards or checks on how Stalin can use those powers. I’m available for cable TV interviews and praise!’” Oh dear, what a false equivalency, a distortion of Flake’s actual statements, and a complete bastardization of Stalin’s legacy.
