The Washington Post reports, “The nation’s top intelligence chiefs testified Tuesday that they fully expect Russia to seek to disrupt the 2018 midterm elections. Appearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats said that Russia will continue using propaganda, false personas and social media to undermine the upcoming elections.” Democrats have this wait and see what happens in 2018 attitude and now everyone is being told 2018 is just 2016 again but with two years of practice – and yet the attitude remains in place. Will Democrats wait two years after the slaughter starts in earnest to wait and see if there is a slaughter then, too? (Signs point to “yes”.) Coats said, “‘There should be no doubt that Russia perceives its past efforts’ to disrupt the 2016 presidential campaign ‘as a success,’ and it ‘views the 2018 midterm elections’ as another opportunity.” The Washington Post notes, “His assessment was echoed by all five other intelligence agency heads present at the hearing, including CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who two weeks ago stated publicly he had ‘every expectation’ that Russia will try to influence the coming elections,” about the same time he was meeting with all three Russian intelligence chiefs in Washington for the first time ever in our nation’s history. The Washington Post notes, “The committee’s Democratic vice chairman,” Mark Warner, “faulted the Trump administration for not preparing for potential Russian interference in the 2018 elections.” Bloomberg reports Coats, “said ‘there’s no single agency in charge’ of blocking potential Russian meddling in this year’s midterm elections during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, as the panel’s top Democrat tore into the Trump administration for inaction.” Warner observed, “the fact that we don’t have clarity about who’s in charge means that we don’t have a full plan,” adding, “we still don’t have a comprehensive plan.” That’s not something you can really expect a Russian puppet or his minions to do, after all.

Bloomberg reports, “FBI Director Christopher Wray said he won’t discuss the Russian investigation with President Donald Trump.” Wray told a Senate intelligence committee meeting Tuesday, “I am not going to discuss the investigation in question with the president, much less provide information from that investigation to him”. So does this mean he already took his loyalty oath?

From Bloomberg.

The Washington Post reports, “FBI Director Christopher A. Wray on Tuesday contradicted the White House’s account of when the bureau informed officials about the status of a senior aide’s security-clearance investigation.” The Washington Post recalls, “White House officials said that they were first contacted in the summer by the FBI about senior aide Rob Porter’s clearance. They also said that the investigation was never completed and that they did not know the extent of the allegations against PorterHe stepped down last week after accusations of spousal abuse by his two ex-wives.” In many ways, this is a most unremarkable tale in this White House headed up by a treasonous, pussy grabbing fake who has surrounded himself with the walking, talking, breathing security hazards like idiot Aryan princess Ivanka and her squeaky voiced husband, princeling son-of-a-convicted-felon Jared. But The Washington Post continues that, “Wray, testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the FBI submitted a partial report on his clearance in March and that the investigation was completed in July. Soon after, he said, the FBI received a request for a follow-up, which the bureau completed and provided in November. The FBI closed the file in January and then earlier this month, Wray said, the bureau received additional information and ‘we passed that on as well.’” In customary Washington fashion, the most circuitous route may be the most direct. Of course, Wray’s “remarks come as the White House has sought to deflect criticism over its handling of Porter’s clearance, saying it relies on law enforcement and intelligence agencies to run the process,” The Washington Post notes. Well as The Washington Post will not say it, TRUMPISTAN WATCH will: that is a lie. The Washington Post notes, “Wray’s comments stand in stark contrast to how the White House has in recent days portrayed the status of the background check and when senior officials knew about the allegations of abuse against Porter.” Three letters folks: L-I-E. Memo to Washington from the Trumpistani heartland: the death cult leader is a treasonous puppet so all other breaches flow from there. How is this a bigger deal than Trump giving foreign intelligence to an adversary inside the White House? How is this a bigger deal than three Russian intel chiefs coming to Washington for private consultations with the CIA Director and the Director of National Intelligence? How is this a bigger deal than the fake Russian president making a $130,000 payment via his personal attorney from a Delaware registered LLC to a porn star during the campaign? Enough with the bullshit, the empire has no security as long as the orange lunatic sits where he does now. All else follows.

From The Washington Post.

The Washington Examiner reports, “James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, said Tuesday that White House chief of staff John Kelly is ‘reminiscent’ of Mike Flynn, the former national security adviser who resigned under pressure last year,” who has also taken a guilty plea in exchange for his cooperation with the FBI and Special Counsel Mueller’s office. On CNN, “Clapper explained the limited extent of his familiarity with Kelly — admitting that he doesn’t know him ‘well’ — but said Kelly was a ‘great Marine.’ But now that Kelly is in the White House, after a stint leading the Homeland Security Department, Clapper said there has been a ‘sad’ turn of events.” Clapper stated, “To me, somewhat reminiscent of Mike Flynn, to be honest,” adding, “He just seems to have changed since he’s fallen into the orb of the president. And it’s — I — it’s kind of sad, for me.”

USA Today reports, “The State Department is only now getting started to combat Russian meddling in U.S. politics, even as intelligence officials warn of threats to the 2018 midterm elections. An agreement to transfer $40 million from the Defense Department to State’s Global Engagement Center is expected to be approved this week to counter Russian influence that began before the 2016 presidential election, said Daniel Kimmage, the center’s acting coordinator.” USA Today notes, “The center was created in 2016 by President Barack Obama to counter extremist propaganda and disinformation produced by al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. To date that remains its first priority. The new State Department effort will adapt some approaches to counterterrorism to the counter Russian work, and provide research-based best practices to U.S. agencies and allies.”

The Los Angeles Times reports, “House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says fellow Californian Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Tulare) should lose the chairmanship of the powerful House Intelligence Committee over his handling of the Russia investigation and a memo Republicans say discredits the FBI’s role in a separate investigation.” You think? The Los Angeles Times adds, “Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said in a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan that Nunes’ insistence on making the memo public over the FBI and Justice Department’s objections that it is inaccurate and contains classified information is putting the House of Representatives’ integrity at stake.” The problem with letters like this is that it pretends that death cult Republicans like Ryan still have the same values as those of the Founding Fathers and the republic.

Business Insider reports, “Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday that he will not make any revisions to the Democratic memo that was drafted as a rebuttal to the so-called Nunes memo, authored by Chair Devin Nunes.” Business Insider recalls, “The Nunes memo purports to show the FBI and Department of Justice abusing their surveillance authority when they submitted a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to monitor Carter Page, a former adviser to President Donald Trump’s campaign,” however it does nothing of the sort. So it goes that “The Democratic memo, which Schiff authored, was crafted as a response to the Nunes memo. The House Intelligence Committee unanimously voted to release it to the White House last Monday,” but the White House said no way last Friday at the close of business because it runs counter-counter-interference to the DARKNESS AT NUNES operation to shutdown the House intelligence committee’s investigation. So it goes Business Insider reports, “‘We’re not going to make any revisions to it,’ Schiff said Tuesday. ‘The only question is what redactions will be made. And obviously we’d like to keep those to a minimum.’”

CNBC reports, “Within the next few years, Moscow and Beijing could possess “destructive” weapons for use in a potential space conflict, U.S intelligence agencies warned in a report on Tuesday. The two United Nations Security Council members are pursuing ‘anti-satellite weapons as a means to reduce U.S. and allied military effectiveness,’ the report said, reflecting input from organizations including the FBI, the CIA, and the National Security Agency.”

Haaretz reports, “Russian fighters were among those killed when U.S.-led coalition forces clashed with pro-government forces in Syria this month, former associates of the dead said on Monday – however the majority of casualties are believed to be hired mercenaries from para-military company Wagner.” This is a remarkable jump from yesterday when just two Russian mercenaries were known to be dead, according to Reuters, which noted it could not independently confirm the deaths. Haaretz recalls, “A U.S. official has said more than 100 fighters aligned with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad died when coalition and local coalition-backed forces thwarted a large attack overnight on Feb. 7. However, other local reports place the death toll as high as 200. Russia’s Defence Ministry, which supports Assad’s forces in the Syrian civil war, said at the time that pro-government militias involved in the incident had been carrying out reconnaissance and no Russian servicemen had been in the area.” Interestingly, “The Kremlin said on Tuesday it had no information about Russian mercenaries reportedly being killed in Syria, saying it only knew about Russian nationals who had been deployed there as members of the Russian armed forces,” Haaretz adds, noting, “Putin’s years-long incursion into Syria is deeply unpopular domestically and has long been plagued by reports that the Russian government under reports the official death toll of Russians in Syria for political reasons.” ABC News adds, “Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Tuesday that Russia has told the U.S. there were no Russians in the area of the strike. Mattis said he saw the news reports about Russian contractors possibly being casualties of the bombing.” ABC News reports, “Russian media said the Russian private contractors were part of pro-government forces that advanced on oil fields in the eastern Deir el-Zour province and were targeted by the United States. The reports cited activists who confirmed that at least four Russian citizens were killed in Syria on [last] Wednesday.” In addition to the two deaths reported yesterday, ABC News adds, “The state Tass news agency on Tuesday cited Natalya Krylova, a municipal lawmaker in the town of Asbestos in the Urals, as saying local residents Igor Kosoturov and Stanislav Matveyev were killed in Syria Wednesday.” Additionally, “Russian media also cited unconfirmed claims that overall casualties could have been as high as 200 and Russians could have accounted for the bulk of them. Those claims couldn’t be verified.”

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
reports, “The United States has accused Russia of stoking the conflict in Ukraine by disregarding its commitments under peace accords. The U.S. State Department said in a statement on February 13 that Russia continues to deny its direct involvement in the violence that erupted in April 2014 and has seen more than 10,300 people killed by fighting between Kyiv’s forces and the separatists who control parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.” Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty adds, “Cease-fire deals announced as part of the Minsk accords — September 2014 and February 2015 pacts aimed to resolve the conflict — have failed to hold.”

Unian Information Agency reports, “Russian hacker Konstantin Kozlovsky, who is being charged with penetrating Russian banks’ computer networks, claims he developed a program called LDCS, which affected the results of the presidential elections in the U.S. on a voting day.” Now who still believes that ruthless KGB bastards did everything they could to meddle in American elections from disinformation to kompramat but stopped short of altering the sacred count? Allow TRUMPISTAN WATCH to ask one more time: when have you observed Russia leave things to chance? Unian Information Agency notes, “According to the man’s wife, he is ready to cooperate with the U.S.-based experts to help them investigate the hack of DNC servers.” Unian Information Agency recalls, “Konstantin Kozlovsky was arrested in the summer of 2016. The FSB and Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that they had halted operations of 40 hackers from the Lurk group, who, according to the investigation, had stolen more than RUB 1.2 billion from the accounts in Russian banks with the help of malware,” adding, “in December 2017 Kozlovsky said that Russian special services supervised the creation of WannaCry and Lurk malware.” In Russia, the true thieves are state-sanctioned and everyone else is at the mercy of the mafia state. So as TRUMPISTAN WATCH has long maintained, eventually Putin will say yes, he hacked our elections and only Trump will be left denying it. This puts us on that path. Putin will do so out of either total triumphalism or utter defeat; that is up to us.

Axios reports, “Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab has filed a lawsuit targeting the second of two federal bans on its wares. The latest suit goes after language in a defense law explicitly blocking the purchase of Kaspersky products. An earlier suit targets a Homeland Security directive doing the same.” Axios adds, “Kaspersky argues, in a Monday filing in D.C. federal court, that the defense authorization serves as an unconstitutional ‘bill of attainder,’ a law targeted specifically at an individual or small group.”

The Times of London reports, “Russia’s opposition leader has urged Google and Facebook to refuse Kremlin demands to block his latest investigation about a government official meeting an oligarch on a yacht with a group of female escorts. In an interview with The Times Alexei Navalny urged the companies not to cave in to a legal notice from the communications watchdog demanding that they delete video and photographs from the services they own, YouTube and Instagram, by this evening.” Fakebook and Google, this is both a democracy lesson and a history test. No one reasonable and sane expects that the big tech giants will pass when they have failed us all so much already.

The Guardian reports, “Julian Assange will continue to face detention if he leaves the Ecuadorian embassy in London after a British judge upheld a warrant for his arrest. Handing down her judgment before a packed courtroom at Westminster magistrates court, senior district judge Emma Arbuthnot said she was not persuaded by the argument from Assange’s legal team that it was not in the public interest to pursue him for skipping bail.” It is always richly ironic when Asswipe and his minions choose to decide for us what is and is not in the public’s interest! Recall he was wanted on rape charges in Sweden, but the Swedes dropped the case and now Asswipe is locked in at the Ecuadorean Embassy because he “suspects there is a secret US grand jury indictment against him and American authorities will seek his extradition.” The jumping bail charge technically pertains to the Swedish case. Everything that follows is contingent entirely on Asswipe’s atrocious narcissistic personality.

The New York Times reports, “Michael D. Cohen, President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, said on Tuesday that he had paid $130,000 out of his own pocket to a pornographic-film actress who had once claimed to have had an affair with Mr. Trump.” TRUMPISTAN WATCH has long said, based on experience in post-socialist societies, that even the lies reveal further lies. This literally makes no sense but it is very nice of Michael Cohen to step up and step in it. The New York Times adds Cohen “said he was not reimbursed for the payment.” In a statement, Cohen said, “Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly”. That. Makes. No. Sense. Cohen added, “The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone.” Of course, “He declined to answer several follow-up questions, including whether Mr. Trump had been aware that Mr. Cohen made the payment, why he made the payment or whether he had made similar payments to other people over the years.” The New York Times notes, “Mr. Cohen’s statement about what he called ‘a private transaction’ was the first time that he had acknowledged a role in the payment”. The New York Times adds, “Mr. Cohen said that he had given a similar statement to the Federal Election Commission in response to a complaint filed by the government watchdog group Common Cause, which contended that the payment, made through a limited liability company that Mr. Cohen established, was an in-kind contribution to the Trump campaign.”

Bloomberg reports, “President Donald J. Trump’s campaign continued to spend big at Trump hotels, restaurants and the iconic Trump Tower, more than any other political committee. Republican groups spent a little over $1 million at Trump properties in 2017. Of that, almost 70 percent was from Trump’s own campaign and his joint fundraising committees. Most of Trump’s spending was on rent for his campaign’s headquarters at Trump Tower in Manhattan—where rent doesn’t come cheap—and his mounting legal fees.” Bloomberg notes, “Unlike other recent presidents, Trump still has a financial interest in his businesses through a trust. That’s led to lawsuits claiming he’s violating the emoluments clauses of the Constitution, which prohibit federal officers from receiving gifts from foreign governments without the permission of Congress and from being similarly enriched by state governments. And government ethics experts have argued that by not divesting his holdings, Trump opens himself to conflicts of interest if groups seeking to influence federal policy do business at his properties.” But no one cares because that constitution belongs to a free and sovereign republic, which has been replaced by an authoritarian personality cult backed by the Russian mafia state and domestic death cult devotees. Just remember, we once had a country and that country had a constitution. Now we have this shithole Trumpistan.

Vox reports, “hiring records for seasonal workers at three Trump properties in New York and Florida revealed that only one out of 144 jobs went to a US worker from 2016 to the end of 2017. Foreign guest workers with H-2B visas got the rest.” Buy American, hire American, manufacture American – this all applies to everyone who is not named Trump because when you are part of the Trump trash klan, it is just different, it is always different. Vox notes, “The Trump administration temporarily expanded this guest-worker program in 2017 while restricting other avenues of legal immigration, including the H-1B program for high-skilled workers.” And surprise! “The Trump Organization is exactly the kind of company that relies on the H-2B visa program for low-skilled workers,” Vox notes, adding, “from the start of 2016 through the end of 2017,” the Trump Organization “hiring managers said they were able to find and hire only one qualified American worker — a cook — for 144 open positions for servers, cooks, housekeepers, and bartenders.” Furthermore, “Documents show that hiring managers at the Trump establishments made the minimum efforts required by law to recruit US workers.” It is as if there is a preference for the same immigrants Trump routinely rails against and his Department of Homeland Security has a penchant for terrorizing under America’s other Aryan princess, Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

POLITICO reports, “Jared Kushner, a White House aide and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, appears to have drawn more money out of three separate lines of credit in the months after he joined the White House last year, a newly released document shows. Recent revisions to the financial disclosure form filed by Kushner’s wife, Ivanka Trump, bumped up each of those debts to a range of $5 million to $25 million.” POLITICO notes, “The changes take Kushner and Trump’s reported debts to a range of approximately $31 million to $155 million from the previously reported range of between about $19 million and $98 million.” POLITICO adds, “One debt did drop in value as Ivanka Trump’s form was revised: the amount owed on a Visa account went down to a range of $50,001 to $100,000, from $100,001 to $250,000.” That’s her credit card bill!? The best people.

It is rare that TRUMPISTAN WATCH has the opportunity to profile someone who belongs to the Republican Party and has consistently not gone full death cult with Trump, especially in Congress, so enjoy in the delight! Also note that a Republican behaving in a non-death cult, non-self-deluding, bipartisan fashion is news! CNN reports, “Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr publicly and privately is sending a message to his colleagues: He doesn’t want to be like Devin Nunes.” Nobody with a brain and their uncompromised sanity would! CNN notes, “Burr has taken a series of steps over the last several months to make sure that his committee doesn’t devolve into the intense, partisan bickering that has consumed the House Intelligence Committee. And he has privately told confidants and members of the Senate Intelligence Committee he has no desire to emulate the House chairman’s tactics that have become a distraction to the Russia probe — while taking pains to avoid publicly discussing the Nunes memo alleging wrongdoing by the Justice Department over how it obtained a surveillance warrant on a Trump adviser. But Burr has bluntly said he doesn’t think Nunes’ memo had to be made public.” CNN adds, “Burr’s public break from Nunes has surprised some of his Democratic critics, who thought he would carry the water of the Trump administration while leading the Russia probe. Instead, he’s become a major wild card, raising questions about whether he’ll ultimately conclude there was a concerted effort between Russians and the Trump campaign to collude in the 2016 elections — or join his GOP colleagues in saying there’s nothing there.” CNN notes however, “After Burr publicly promised with Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the committee’s ranking Democrat, to hold a public hearing with Cohen, he has yet to move on holding one. Plus some Democrats on the committee, like Oregon’s Ron Wyden, have publicly criticized its leadership for not ‘following the money’ in the Russia investigation, by looking at any Trump financial ties with Russia. Moreover, Burr has faced public pressure from conservatives who want the Russia probe to end, as well as from President Donald Trump himself.” Burr also broke with DARKNESS AT NUNES over his and the White House’s early obstruction effort with the cockamamie “unmasking” scandal. Let’s see what happens.

Reuters reports, “A drop in Russian defense sector spending contributed to a surprise slump in the economy at the end of 2017, analysts and officials said, which has dampened an economic recovery in the countdown to a March presidential election.” Citing “Industry analysts and government officials,” Reuters adds, “the collapse in industrial output was caused by a slowdown in Russian defense spending.” In other words, Russia cannot afford the military hardware required for a full-scale conflict so it must make use of cheaper fixes like social media disinformation, which are relatively affordable and easy to quash if only we were trying or big tech gave a shit about democracy as well as profits.

POLITICO reports, “As President Donald Trump’s legal team privately debates its strategy for dealing with special counsel Robert Mueller, the president’s most visible lawyer has publicly gone on the attack. In recent weeks, Trump personal attorney Jay Sekulow has turned the live weekday talk-radio show he hosts into a regular forum for trashing the legitimacy of the federal probes into Trump’s Russia connections.” POLITICO notes, “Fourteen of the past 19 episodes of ‘Jay Sekulow Live’ have involved freewheeling conversations about the Trump-Russia saga and what he calls the ‘deep state’ bureaucrats out to get the president. Sekulow also piles on during his regular appearances on Fox News.” POLITICO adds, all this “leaves observers wondering whether Sekulow has shed his past image as a serious attorney with Supreme Court credentials to become a public relations warrior fighting for Trump’s presidency in the political arena.” Excellent question! Sekulow also “runs a nonprofit called the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ),” which is clearly a GONGO (government organized non-government organization, or fake civil society intended to supplant and ultimately replace he real deal) designed to sound like the far more credible and authentic ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). Sekulow, in other words, is a Soviet character incarnate.

Vanity Fair reports, “BuzzFeed is taking the Democratic National Committee to court in an attempt to compel it to turn over information it believes will bolster its defense against Aleksej Gubarev, a Russian business magnate who says he was libeled in the dossier when it tied him to the Russians’ alleged hacking of the D.N.C.’s e-mail servers. In a nutshell: BuzzFeed believes the D.N.C. has information that could show a link between Gubarev and the e-mail hacking, which would undercut his libel claim.” Vanity Fair adds, “BuzzFeed’s motion asserts that the D.N.C., citing privacy concerns, has been unwilling to comply with a subpoena for that information.” Vanity Fair notes, “In legal papers, the D.N.C. has argued that disclosing the digital signatures, supposedly left by the Russia-directed hacking organizations known as Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear, would inevitably expose details of the D.N.C.’s information systems, possibly making them more vulnerable to another hack.”

“NBC News is publishing its database of more than 200,000 tweets that Twitter has tied to ‘malicious activity’ from Russia-linked accounts during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.” NBC News adds, “These accounts, working in concert as part of large networks, pushed hundreds of thousands of inflammatory tweets, from fictitious tales of Democrats practicing witchcraft to hardline posts from users masquerading as Black Lives Matter activists. Investigators have traced the accounts to a Kremlin-linked propaganda outfit founded in 2013 known as the Internet Research Association (IRA),” noting, “they’re not done.” NBC News adds, “In January, Twitter emailed nearly 700,000 users to tell them they may have engaged with the Russian accounts. Less than two weeks later, Twitter announced the number of users notified had more than doubled,” but is still a gross underassessment. TRUMPISTAN WATCH knows of interactions it carried out both purposefully and accidentally with Russian trolls and the receipt of threats, Nazi pictures, you name it TRUMPISTAN WATCH has gotten it – and yet no letter from Twitter. Despite their obvious bullshit, “Twitter said it has a ‘commitment to transparency’ and has handed over to Congress a list of 3,814 account names it connected to the IRA. Twitter has since suspended those accounts,” NBC News notes. If Twitter is incapable of providing real sunlight on the issue, let others such as NBC News come forward.

NPR reports, “Cybersecurity experts are confirming that a computer malware attack dubbed ‘Olympic Destroyer’ hit select networks and Wi-Fi systems at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang on Friday, but they would not say for sure whether Russia or North Korea are to blame.” Trump’s great friends or North Korea in other words! NPR notes, “Users with a @pyeongchang2018.com email address were targeted in the attack, which lasted less than an hour on Friday night”. NPR adds, “The Pyeongchang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Games (POCOG) confirmed the cyberattack caused a malfunction of Internet protocol televisions (IPTVs) at the Main Press Center, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News.” A Wired report cited by NPR said, “neither Olympics organizers nor security firms are ready to point the finger at the Kremlin, the hackers seem to have at least left behind some calling cards that look rather Russian.” NPR adds, “Russian hackers may have targeted the Olympics because the country’s athletes were barred from competing under the Russian Federation flag due to a doping scandal that dates to the 2014 games in Sochi.”
